Title: Finally made a CHAIN GUARD for my RadRunner Gen I
Post by: NorthParkRad on April 11, 2024, 05:20:41 PM
Tired of ruining my cuffs with black chain grease. I do use bike cuff clips (get those on eBay), but they are not always effective. So I finally made a chain guard for my RadRunner Gen I.
You'll need a saber saw with a metal cutting blade, and a good gauge cookie sheet works well for the metal. I folded it along the top edge, and along the wide end where it is bolted to the frame to give it needed double-thickness extra strength. I used the two existing holes on the frame to secure it with bolts. There is just the right amount of space between the pedal and the chain, so it does not scrape the guard (final photo).
Here it is:

Does the forward end just float there? It should be easy to fabricate a brace to the down tube.

Yes, it just floats there. And of course that was a concern, and the reason why I folded the metal for reinforcement. It's surprisingly stable though. The down tube is maybe 6" away, but I suppose a brace connected to it could be installed. So far, I see no need to.

Nice! Would mind sharing the dimensions? I have fabricated another solution but yours looks way better!

Ah, yes.
If you buy a new-ish second-hand one from a thrift store it'll (A) be cheap, and (B) have a nice Teflon coating that will shed water and mud.
