RadCity / Re: USB blowout?
April 10, 2022, 10:18:24 AM
Did the shop power up and test the bike before trying to add the USB dongle?  If it was working fine prior to that, my first thought is that the dongle had a manufacturing problem and was miswired or internally-shorted.  Just plugging in one of those should be a low-risk no-brainer.

If designed properly, there should be no way to plug the dongle in wrong (notches, tabs and pin gender to make sure the connector is aligned properly before making electrical connection).  Likewise, it should cause no harm to install a dongle with the battery installed, but the bike turned off at the controller - does the instruction sheet for the dongle make any mention of removing the battery before installing?  (That would be a good idea anyway.)

Good luck and hope it works out quickly and easily, at least for you.   Note that I have a MiniST with no dongle, so don't have firsthand experience with those.

Quote from: Tree on April 09, 2022, 01:51:39 PMnah, i just call people out when they say stupid stuff, and "face diaper" is VERY high up there on the list of stupid things people say.

And so is "a tool to tout your own idiocy, hatred, and ignorance" as well, perhaps a tad more.  So let's call it a draw, ok?
I'm content, albeit eager, to stand by until November.

I've seen people with selfie sticks and the videos don't show the selfie sticks.  How do they do that?  Does anyone know?

That's a good question; I've wondered that too, and assumed it's software associated with a fisheye or 360-degree lens.  Hopefully somebody knows, but you might also ping forum-owner Ryan to this question - I think he uses that technique.

Quote from: Slowrider on April 09, 2022, 11:01:09 AMI've thought about buying another bell for my RadCity 5.  Hmmm I wonder if anyone makes something comical sounding just for when you're slowly coming up on pedestrians but don't want to startle them.  A bell unlike a horn is sort of neutral but if there was a funny noisemaker that would be more positive and get a more cheerful response.  Of course you could only use this for situations where you didn't need them to move out of the way really quickly.

Something like this might be just what you're looking for; scroll down to reviews and there's a short video in one that lets you hear it.

Quote from: Slowrider on April 09, 2022, 10:38:34 AMI think as e-bike riders we should try to show people that yes it can be dangerous but with the proper knowledge that danger can be minimized making it a fun activity.

Yep, agreed; I've been through this with motorcycles and airplanes too.  Best to just not be a jerk about it and learn how to ease new people into the idea if they're receptive - never insist.

I even have three bells on my Mini - the cheerful little dinger that came on it for quiet woods trails, a bigger and louder bell for the beach trails that tend to have surf/wind noise and a blistering electronic one to cut through a rolled-up car window on the rare occasions it's necessary.  Moderation and proportion in all things works pretty well.

RadCity / Re: Rad City ST 3 or a Mini ST

Just a little nudge for clarification: "RR" could mean Rad Rover, Runner or Rhino; sometimes it's hard to tell which is being discussed and they're sorta different from each other.

Quote from: Slowrider on April 08, 2022, 02:03:20 PMI feel as a group we really need get it together and do our very best when it comes to representing e-bikes to the public.  This is a relatively new technology and peoples first instinct is fear.

EDIT: I took the poll; you don't have to log in or provide identity info unless you wish.  Thanks again.
---------------

Thanks for the notification; I'll have a go at it.  But my biggest fear is fear itself - here in the "land of the free and the home of the brave" I still see a few ninnies driving their car alone on the roads with their face diaper strapped tightly in place like dutiful serfs.

People have been trained to not only be fearful but to enjoy being afraid as their first response to anything new.  This is not good for e-bike acceptance or life in general.

I bought a Rad Rover ST last may.  $1600 US. I'm 67 years old  5'  11" 240LBS. The rad rovers an excellent bike I've put on 4500mi and plan to make 5000mi before May 18th it's birthday. I ride 30-35 a day. Also have a new Mini ST waiting for warmer weather bought that for the hen to drive.  Live in Wisconsin go Badgers!!

Best wishes for hitting your mark on your birthday!  My Dad departed in 2018 but would have been 94 on your birthday this year, so you're just a pup.  And it just so happens I have a MiniST2 and dare people to tell me I'm on a "girl's bike".   >:(

Hi all, I had to take the video down. The information is out there but unfortunately I can't share it.

You HAD to take the video down? Why? Since when are we not allowed to share ideas, thoughts and/or methods to do stuff? Especially with our own stuff?

Exactly what I'm wondering.  I bet Ryan was pressured by Rad with an implied or explicit threat of no more bikes to review in the future; can't really fault him for that.  So, now we apply a little bit of research and republishing if the information is needed.

A verbal description should be sufficient if another video isn't made by somebody.

General Chat / Re: HubSink motor cooling fins
April 05, 2022, 01:38:49 PM
Unless your motor runs quite hot for a fairly long period of time, it might take so long to heat up this heatsink enough to be effective that by the time it is, your motor is already cooling off.  I don't doubt their testing, but was it "real world" realistic?  Heat transfer was one of my engineering specialties and so I can sort of "see" heat move; fins work great, but they're not terribly effective until they've had a chance to warm up - the thinner (but more fragile), the better for fast response.

The motor and controller are mostly metal, so if you were smelling hot plastic, check your cable connectors to make sure they're fully seated and protected from moisture.

But frankly, on a Runner there's something I'd worry about more.  I have a MiniST2 with the same size wheel, and it's very difficult for me to attach my floor-standing hand pump to the rear valve stem as it is - the flip lever keeps wanting to hit the motor case before it reaches full extension.  With those fins on the motor it would be impossible for me to attach my pump to the rear tire.  Other pumps with different fittings may work better and of course the bigger Rover and City wheels don't have this problem.

Wow the The Juintech M1 hydraulic calipers seems like a really easy upgrade to do myself.  Has anyone been successful with this upgrade on a RAD bike that they could share their experience and how well they work?  My goal is to reduct the amount of break adjustments.  I'm hoping that hydraulic calipers will require less maintenance.  I also noticed a color difference on the Calipers that are sold from Area13 and Amazon.  Does anyone know the difference other than color?

I'll know in a few days; my M1's have shipped from Bolton.  There are a number of comments on the product page there from people who installed them easily, including Rad owners - I don't expect any difficulty since these mounting interfaces seem to be pretty standardized, as you'd expect in a market that buys components from multiple suppliers.

I believe the color difference is among different models; Juintech has an R1 for a lower price on Amazon and Bolton's M1 is cheaper than Amazon for the same model.  I haven't researched the differences between models, but I like Bolton and happy to give them more business.

As for adjustments, you'll still have a bit of stretch in the mechanical cable, especially if the cable is new, and as the pads wear you'll need to tweak that, but the Juintech design makes that adjustment a lot easier with just a knob to twist, needing no tools.  Overall, I expect less maintenance, but not zero.  Even fully-hydraulic systems with no cable to stretch should require pad-wear tweaking.

Thanks folks ... I guess I will bring the bike to my local bike shop.  Sounds like it is possible.

The Juintech M1 hydraulic calipers ($149 at Bolton, $169 Amazon) are a pretty easy drop-in replacement for the stock Rad mechanical calipers ( https://velomobileshop.com/products/juintech-m1-hydraulic-calipers-easy-install-on-most-ebikes ); Bolton has a 3-year old Youtube vid showing how:  https://youtu.be/eqR-k3C-6nk

Unless you're really skittish about working with tools (a 5 mm hex wrench and a cutter/crimper like needlenose pliers are all you need), there's no need to spend the money having a shop do the work.  I've ordered a set and will install in a week or two.

I just ordered a set of the Juintech M1 brake calipers from Bolton/Area13 yesterday.  In stock and $20 less expensive than Amazon.  Thanks for the tips on this thread to give them a try!
