General Chat / Re: Has anybody Used a Seat post Offset
October 18, 2020, 11:32:18 AM
Hello VictorJay. Yes I have had this issue. After decades of riding road bikes and then a recumbent I was concerned that I could not get the proper leg extension on my MiniST2. I have only had it a short while but I quickly found out that you don't have to have a perfect leg extension to enjoy riding a RAD.

I've set my seat so I can just touch the ground with my toes. Lean to one side and I can put my foot down flat. I set the derailleur for the speed I want to ride and use the throttle to start out. Once I start moving, I start peddling and the electric assist kicks in. While not having a full leg extension felt odd at first it did not take me long to get used to the new position. I have set my seat back as far as possible and I now ride in a very upright cruiser-like position and enjoy the scenery, even at 20mph.  :)

I have learned a couple of things thanks to RadJohn. I did not know about the laws that pertain to electric bicycles. Very informative. Thank you. I have also learned that you can count on people who think they are above the law.

General Chat / Re: bash guard bent ?

Kudos to RAD for the way the bike was packed for shipping. :) They used huge amounts of what I believe to be polyethylene foam to protect the bike. There were big blocks of it to hold everything in place, sheets of it zip-tied in place to protect paint and components, and a sheet of hard plastic attached to the box to protect the derailleur area. Everything was in a heavy triple-wall cardboard shipping box. I don't know about other bikes, but the shipping for the ST2 was well engineered. No telling how hard of a hit it had to take to bend the bash guard and derailleur. I don't know what else they could have done to protect the bike during shipment. I think the shipping materials weighed almost half as much as the bike itself.

The bad news was the disposal of all of that material. The cardboard was easily recycled, but the polyethylene foam ended up the the land fill. :( I could not find anyone in our area that could recycle it.

General Chat / Front Suspension Lockout

I have a RAD Mini ST2. There is a knob on the front fork that will lockout the suspension. Why would anyone want to lockout the suspension?

Koki,

I purchased two RAD Mini ST2s. One was received without any damage, the other had the bash guard bent. As with RadJohn, I took the guard off and straightened it using a vise, hammer and eyeball to straighten it. I put it back on and thought the problem was solved. But when I rode the bike I discovered that the derailleur did not shift properly.

I tried to loosen the shift cable but it did not help. Then I discovered the derailleur mounting was bent and the sprockets were out of alignment. With the guard off, I used a 5mm hex socket and a 3/8" breaker bar to coax the derailleur back into alignment. 5mm hex socket was inserted into the derailleur pivot bolt and the breaker bar was used for leverage. BTW, this is a completely inappropriate use of these tools. I could have broken the hex socket and/or damaged the derailleur. The sprockets did come back into better alignment and the bikes has been shifting okay.

The photo shows a straight edge aligned with the frame and the amount the bracket was bent. It didn't take much to mess up the shifting.

If I understand what you want to do, why not use a pulley from above? Put the hook around the front wheel, pull the rope through the pulley raising the front as the bike becomes vertical. Look at a kayak/canoe lift. They have a brake at the pulley so the rope will not let down until released. https://amzn.to/2EJNLWK

I don't know about the phone mount, but you want a Miricycle mountain bike mirror. It fits into the bar end, works very well and doesn't take up any room on the handlebar. If it is tightened just right you can swing it out of the way when you fold the bike and it will stay in place when you ride.  ;D

Will, thank you for the reply. I was hoping it was a normal sound. The more I ride it the more I can tune it out. I am an old goat and getting more deaf every day.
Huh?  ;D

General Chat / Wa-Wa-Wa-Wa...
September 10, 2020, 11:26:03 AM
Brand new owner here. Rad Mini Step-through.

Love the bike. Had it for a couple of days and 35 miles on the odometer. My question is about motor noise. When riding under power the motor makes a wa-wa-wa-wa noise. Let go of the throttle or stop pedaling and the noise is gone so it is not tire or brake noise. The noise is not particularly loud but it is constant under power.

I assume some noise from the motor is to be expected. If the noise was a constant buzz I would not mind, but the wa-wa-wa... drives me nuts. Is this a normal noise or should I be concerned?

Thanks,
Paul
