Hi all?

I have a rad city 3 that I?m running with an aftermarket 52v battery and original RAD controller and display which I?ve read  should be ok.

The bike runs fine, but the display is set up for 48v battery, so it dies abruptly and completely at 2-3 bars, since the BMS is set up for 48V, which can drop significantly lower than 52v without damaging them.

Does anyone know what voltage  each battery bar represents, so I can better guess where my battery Level is at?

The stock parts I have that I am building with are:

2019 rad wagon direct drive  wheel/7speed stack
radwagon wiring harness
two stock displays and controllers from a radcity and a rover from someone on this forum who upgraded their controller


still needed:

compatible throttle
battery connector
brake cut off (I  guess? Wasn't going to hook up PAS)

I called rad and they said the 2019 wagon isn't compatible with ANY other rad bikes controller, but that just makes no sense! They also said that the only displays compatible with the 2019 wagon controller are from the 2020 rover or 2020 city, which seems totally arbitrary to this newbie..

I know the upgraded controller and screen are supposed to be awesome, but I'm trying to build this bike for as cheap as I can, and the extra $200 is more than I want to spend on a controller for this bike (I've already put a silly amount of money into the frankenwagon, including for a new rear wheel)). I have a cheap 52V Chinese battery of unknown quality that I ordered off EBAY to use.. not sure what else I'm forgetting...

Per your point re: ebikes not being easily assembled for cheap, that's certainly true, but I figured that with an extra rear motor wheel in a standard size, I'm not that far away from a second functioning bike. I hope that in the near future, they will be more accessible to more people, as they really do eliminate a lot of car trips.

I have a 2019 radwagon that I bought second hand. It's been modded to the point where all that's original is the frame and the rear motor wheel, which isn't connected to power since it now has a Bafang midrive motor... so now I'm trying to figure out how to reuse the rear motor wheel to electrify another 26" mountain bike!


  • I was going to to try and buy a used Rad display/controller, but the issue is that Rad says the 2019 wagon isn't compatible with other Rad models controllers or displays.

  • How can this be? If the Bolton kit is plug and play across all models, how can the Rad controllers also not be interchangeable?

  • (yes, I know I could just BUY the bolton kit, but this is a spare hobby bike for when friends visit and I don't want to invest $200+ in it)

  • What throttles are compatible with the rad wiring harness? I bought a half twist for the Bafang motor that I really like, but have no idea how to check if it would work.. the connector looks very similar. Do you have any to recommend that you know work without any soldering and splicing?

I'm working on a similar project, reusing the motor wheel from my mid-drive converted 2019 radwagon to try and electrify a separate mtb, and trying to figure out how to do it.

Does the controller/display/wire if harness work with rad motor? It looks like it has fewer wires, just at first glance.

Sounds like a great rebuild!

I bought a used 2019 radwagon from a Friend and I'm trying to get my  head around all the mods he did—also using a bbhsd and 52v battery.

A few questions:

What did you do with the rear wheel? I'm currently looking at replacing the stock wheel with the DD Motor to shed weight and motor drag, but all the available 26" wheels i've found either have 14g spokes, or are only compatible with rim brakes.

Did you have any issues mounting the battery? Mine is currently held on with hose clamps, because my friend Couldn't get it to line up with the original battery bosses (and then lost the battery key, so I'm sorta stuck with this for now)

Also wondering what kind of range you are getting out of that set up. I used the programming cable to adjust some of the controller settings but I'm not happy with the way it's responding yet and would love to know your settings. Im looking for a balance between power and range. At full charge, my DC18 display tells me I'll have 21 miles of range, but I've gone further than that... I've also had to ride home 5 miles on dead battery and that was not a pleasure!

Would love to see pictures!

That's helpful. Do you happen to have links where to get the parts mentioned that will work with the rad motor?

Also, do I NEED brake cutoff switches, if I'm just running throttle? I have a half twist throttle on the radwagon and it's intuitive to let go of the throttle when I brake. 

Also unsure about what i need to check to make sure the radwagon wheel will fit, and the rad site doesn't list the axel width and other dimensions etc.

The bike I have has 29" wheels, but i've read about 69er mtb's and figure I could try it and then get a cheap 26" mtb if it doesn't ride well.

Still looking for a strong rear wheel for the wagon. All the disc brake compatible 26" wheels I've found have 14 gauge spokes, and I'm worried the weight I carry will be too much.

New to the forum, so please direct me if this belongs somewhere else!

I bought a heavily modded radwagon from a friend (bafang mid drive motor conversion) and it still has the original rear wheel with motor. I'm going to get a new rear wheel built to cut out the extra weight and magnet drag, but am wondering the following:

1) what would I need to build out a separate ebike using the radwagon wheel/motor? I know I need a controller, a screen, and a battery, but if I want to run it throttle only, do I need a pas sensor and wheel sensor fro speedometer? Any recommendations on a bike frame to build onto? Do Rad screens and motor controller show up second hand? What type of cabling do I need for thai build?

2) any recommendations for replacement 26" rear wheels for the radwagon? The original has 12gauge spokes. To have one built will be over $200, so if there's a good resource to buy a sturdy rear wheel for a cargo bike I'd appreciate your suggestions.
