Rad Modifications / Rear Blinking Light Mounting Mod
March 09, 2023, 03:52:04 PM
I wanted to install a blinking rear red light, but most lights mount to the seat post.  This setup wouldn't work on my RR6 plus, so I made a mounting "device" from PVC and it works great.

RadRunner / Re: DIY Rad Runner + truck bed rack?

I built this same rack for our RR6 plus bikes, and It works great. I painted it black. I use it in an older '96 Ford F150 truck. I also use an aluminum ramp I used for a motorcycle to load the bikes into the bed of the truck.

RadMission / Re: handlebar riser for Radmission

So ended up with the Delta riser. I should have bought this from the start based on previous advice, but I tried to go the less expensive route first ($12 vs $40).  It works perfect and it raises up my handlebars quite a bit.

I tried installing the handlebar  riser again by tightening the center screw first and then tightening the riser screws. It still has play. I even put a couple spacers on top of the top riser before putting in the center screw to ensure it wasn't hitting the fork tube and still couldnt get the play out. I then took it apart and put back on the original riser and it works perfect with no play. Very odd.  This is the one I'm using. I'm going to return it and maybe try the delta riser.

Rad Modifications / Re: Suntour SP12 NCX seat post

I've been looking for more of a "lay-back" for my seat in terms of 1-2" (otherwise rear basket is in the way).  My question is I'm short 5'1" and my seat is nearly fully down, if I switch out for the Suntour seat post  will I be able to keep it as "low" or does the suspension mechanism raise it up?  Also will it give me the "lay-back" that I'm looking for.  The cushioning part is a + but not mandatory.  I'm a lightweight! This is going on a RadExpalnd 5.  Thanks!
I'm not sure where you're located, but you can probably visit or call a Rad retail store and ask them this question. The Rad store in Imperial Beach by San Diego uses that seat post on a few of their test ride bikes.

I bought this one for my RR6 and was able to install it, but I couldn't get the original riser (the tappered part) to lay flush against where it meets the frame and it had too much play in it. I tightened the long center screw as tight as i could get it too. Once I removed it and put back on the original stock one, it fit flush and had no play. I might need to try a different one.

That happened to me when I installed a similar riser on my Radmission. I tightened until I couldn't get it any tighter because the unseen "nut" was turning. Having installed a similar riser on my Radrunner, I thought I knew what I was doing. When I took it apart, I saw what I'd done wrong. The center screw works by sliding the riser down the steerer tube until it sandwiches the head tube against the fork assembly. My riser wouldn't slide because I'd tightened the clamping screws. Doh!

I checked Wikipedia to find out what a steerer tube is called. The article doesn't mention any tapered connections. Pushing the head tube down on the steerer tube to be sure there's no play at the bottom, you might drop the riser onto the steerer tube to see if it will slide down against the head tube. If instead it bottoms out against the top of the steerer tube, I guess the 28mm hole in the riser isn't deep enough. In that case, one of the spacers might solve the problem.

The nut that holds the center screw is in a disk in the steerer tube. It wouldn't stand much torque, and little is needed. The screw just holds things in place until the clamping screws are tightened.
That makes sense. I'll give it another try and tightened the center screw before I tighten the two clamp screws on the riser. Thanks for the information.

I use this one. Cheap $6.50, fits perfect

How much height did you add? I'd experiment further if I knew how to extend all those cables.

Maybe 3-4 inches, cables were no problem.

RadRover / Re: Front rack heads up

VegasSteve, I'm running into the same issue installing the front rack on my RR6.  Did you keep the wires on one side or did you end up splitting them on each side of the rack where it mounts to the front of the bike. Maybe if you get a chance, you can post a pic or two of what it looks like. Thanks.

Yes, I'm not sure why they don't have spares for everything. I bought the rear rack and it was missing one of the allen head screws. They couldn't just send me the screw as they don't have them separately. They wanted me to send the entire rack back and they'd send me a new one. I ended up going to the local hardware store and bought the screw instead of playing the return game. What a waste of their time and money instead of carry extra spare parts. I don't understand this type of business practice.

Rad Modifications / Rad Rover 6 Handlebars
October 16, 2022, 12:38:41 PM
I'm looking to add after market handlebars with a higher rise to my RR6 that will work with the factory cables. Can anyone recommend a pair or provide some advice?  I'm looking to sit more upright when I ride. I'm about 6 ft tall, so I when i raise my seat, the stock handlebars are a reach. I've tried adjusting the tilt, but it didn't help.

Thanks.
