Rad Modifications / Re: E bike battery fires
Last post by John Rose - October 30, 2024, 05:05:05 PM
I use this timer on all of my chargers (bike, power tools, lawnmower battery) to limit the amount of time the charger is on.

It's main feature is that it's a countdown timer. Once it times out, it does not repeat the next day, which makes it very different from a regular lighting timer.

If I forget about it for a few days (or weeks), no harm done.

Just added a stem riser on my 6+ and the cables are too tight when turning right. Are cables extenders available?

Assuming that you have adjusted the derailleur, it sounds like either a bent derailleur hanger or a defective freewheel. Grab the large cog on the freewheel and check it for free play when you rock it from side to side. There should be none or very little play. If the derailleur hanger is bent, replace it.

For the sake of argument. Let's assume that you have a bad battery.

Quote from: DickB on September 27, 2022, 01:59:10 PMIf the display powers up the 40A fuse is not blown.

Does the battery charge?

Try to identify which fuses were blown? Do you have a meter to test with?

Since you have already opened the battery compartment. We know you have a surface mounted fuse because of black shrink wrap. It looked pretty accessible to measure if you have an open (bad) or shorted (good) fuse.

Be careful cutting the shrink wrap. People have accidentally slit the flex copper ribbon that goes to the charge level LEDs.

Once you have determined whether you have a blown 10A or 40A fuse. Fixing it is not be that difficult unless you do not have the proper equipment. Soldering irons are super cheap just make sure you have the correct tip. And be careful not to overheat what you are soldering.

Can anyone please help me identify how to stop my bike from sounding crunchy when I pedal? It only makes this sound while pedaling and not while the bike is just being powered by the motor. I'm very much an amateur at bike mechanics and have tried adjusting everything that turned without success. Around 2500 miles if that's relevant.

Yeah, I've nicknamed my bike buyer's remorse. The controller issue which renders the lights unusable; they sent me a replacement controller but it has failed again in less than 6mo. The magnetic disc snapped, looked like when Rad delivered it fully assembled they put it on backwards and the old design had indentations on one side that got caught causing it to snap.

The tire recall I found out about not from being contacted at all but from being on the site for an unrelated issue. Then a few months after getting my bike "fixed" I had a catastrophic blowout and broke my wrist because the inner tube installed was the wrong size causing the Tannus armour to fold over itself and rub a hole into the tires. Tannus was super nice, had no idea about the tire recall but supplied me with replacement liners and inner-tubes of the correct size even though it was Rad's fault.
I also got really upset when I went to replace the chain & freewheel only to realize Rad forgot to mention anywhere that you have to order a special tool from them because the electric cord is too fat to thread a normal tool through.
I would be significantly less upset if they had at any point been proactive and honest, openly communicating exactly what was going on and things to watch out for. Instead you get the hassel of dealing with people who act like they have no idea what you're talking about and make you go through so many unnecessary delays and hoops just to identify and address a problem that turns out to be very widespread and well known.

I have learned you have to become a bike mechanic because you can't trust them and most places won't touch their bikes even if Rad says they will.
I think I can maybe get another year tops out of mine and then I'll buy a different brand. I wish Rad was required to come get their lemon off my lawn at that time.
